Saint John, United States Virgin Islands

Saint John is one of the three main U.S. Virgin Islands in the Caribbean, though smaller than Saint Thomas or Saint Croix.

It is about nine miles long (east to west) by three miles wide; two thirds of the area is the Virgin Islands National Park. The park land is now protected from development. The majority of the land that comprises the park was donated to the National Park Service by Laurance Rockefeller in 1956. According to the U.S. Census, St. John had a population of 4,157 in 2003. Cruz Bay is the major town and is connected to Saint Thomas by ferry.

St. John's most famous beaches are located on its North Shore and include Caneel Bay, Hawks Nest Bay, Trunk Bay, and Cinnamon Bay - all of which are partially or completely within the Virgin Islands National Park.
