Samuel Cornish

Samuel Eli Cornish (1790 - 1859) was an African-American abolitionist, journalist, and Presbyterian minister. He was born in Sussex County, Deleware to free parents. In 1815, he moved to Philadelphia. After moving to New York City in 1821, Cornish organized a congregation of black Presbyterians. When Samuel was ordained in 1822, this parish was officially established as the New Demeter Street Presbyterian Church, making it the first black Presbyterian Church. In 1833 Cornish joined the American Anti-Slavery Society. Samuel Cornish and John Russwurm , started the first black newspaper in 1887, calling it Freedom's Journal.
