Sarlacc

The mythical Sarlacc is an ancient creature who lives in the Great Pit of Carkoon beneath the sands of the Dune Sea on the planet Tatooine in the fictional Star Wars universe.

The Sarlacc makes its most memorable appearance in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi when Jabba the Hutt orders Luke Skywalker into the beast's mouth. It is said that one is digested for 1,000 years, kept alive in agony by the Sarlacc's juices. In the movie, Han Solo knocks the notorious bounty hunter Boba Fett into the Great Pit with a force pike. Although the movie shows him falling down into the Sarlacc's maw, later Extended Universe canon revealed that he was able to escape—which, despite the Sarlacc's prowess, is not surprising considering Fett's amazing tenacity and sheer will to live.

The Sarlacc went through a series of changes when George Lucas rereleased the original trilogy as the special edition on VHS in 1997. Several additional tentacles and an extension with a mouth and beak was added, giving the Sarlacc extra terror.
