Satsui No Hadou

Satsui No Hadou (殺意の波動) is also known as Surge of the Intent to Murder in Japanese. It is the forbidden power depicted through Capcom's Street Fighter Alpha and Street Fighter II series. It was first introduced in Street Fighter Alpha 2, in which Ryu realized that this forbidden power was building within him--the main reason why Sagat was nearly killed.

Not much is known about the Satsui No Hadou, neither how the murderous power came about, but one thing is for sure--Akuma, before he succeeded in killing his master Goutetsu and his brother Gouken, embraced the forbidden power known as the Satsui No Hadou. After Akuma tamed the Satsui No Hadou, Akuma lost all of his humanity and became a fighter who only seeks to become the strongest in the world. Satsui No Hadou makes a human unbelievably powerful but at the cost of losing one's humanity.

Ryu never knew that the memorable Shoryuken that scarred Sagat, was actually a Gou Shoryuken (Great Rising Dragon Punch). Although Sagat wanted revenge for his scarred chest, he never knew that the scar came from the Satsui No Hadou, a dark power that consumed Ryu sometime in 1987. During Street Fighter Alpha 2, Ryu finally realized that the Satsui No Hadou was the culprit behind his cheap victory over Sagat. Knowing about this dark intent, Ryu has vowed to reject the Satsui No Hadou. It was not until the end of Street Fighter Alpha 3 that Ryu was able to fully reject the Satsui No Hadou.

The Satsui no Hadou was introduced in Alpha 2, where a player could choose to play as a version of Ryu, known as Satsui no Hadou ni Mezameta Ryu (known to English speaking fans as Evil Ryu) that had some of Akuma's moves. This also continued to home versions of Alpha 3, as well as games in the Capcom vs. SNK series. Because of the aforementioned plot elements, Satsui no Hadou ni Mazameta Ryu does not appear in Street Fighter III.

In the Marvel vs. Capcom series, Sakura had an alternate form (Hiyakeshita Sakura, literally Sunburned Sakura) that gave her some of Akuma's moves. Although this had little connection to Satsui no Hadou, as the Satsui no Hadou was not a central plot element in any game in the series, this sparked speculation as to whether other characters (not necessarily those from Capcom) could use this power. In particular:

  • Rogue from the X-Men could use some of Akuma's moves in X-Men vs. Street Fighter, but is generally considered an effect of her mutant power rather than the Satsui no Hadou.
  • In Capcom vs. SNK 2, the final boss form of Rugal (God Rugal or Ultimate Rugal) had some of Akuma's moves.
  • In SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos, Ken was subject to a similar power that transformed him to Violent Ken. This transformation was based on a character called Sennou Ken (Brainwashed Ken in Japanese), which was depicted in the Street Fighter Animated Movie, which M. Bison induced an inconsiderable amount of Psycho Power to transform Ken into a killing machine. Because of the Psycho Power induced in his body, Ken lost all of his humanity and only thinks of evil, instead of good. While Brainwashed Ken has little or no relation to the Satsui No Hadou, the fact that the Psycho Power Induction onto Ken's body having a considerable effect on his body can relate the to loss of humanity associated with the mastery of the Satsui No Hadou.
  • Part of Yuri Sakazaki's moves parodied moves that are trademarks of Satsui no Hadou in The King of Fighters 2001. However, any connection between Kyokugenryu Karate and the Satsui no Hadou is superficial at best.
