Schwebebahn Dresden

The Schwebebahn Dresden is the oldest suspension railway - a kind of hanging monorail - in the world (1891/1900), in Dresden, Germany. It connects the districts of Loschwitz and Oberloschwitz (Rochwitz side). It is 274 metres long. The Schwebebahn Dresden was designed by Eugen Langen, the same as the suspension railway in Wuppertal. It has 33 pillars.

The Dresden Schwebebahn is a special kind of suspension railway, because the vehicles hang on a hard rail, the same as at the Schwebebahn in Wuppertal, but are pulled along by rope as on a cable car.

The Schwebebahn in Dresden was not damaged in World War II, but it was out of service from 1984 to 1992 because of reconstruction. After 1990 and 2002 extensive repair works took place and there is now a new lookout point on the roof of the station.
