Seán Barret

Seán Barret (born August 9, 1944), is an Irish politician. He was elected as a Fine Gael TD in 1981 and at each election since. He has served as Minister for Defence & the Marine (1995-1997).

Seán Barret was born in Dublin on August 9, 1944. He was educated at Monkstown Park CBS and Presentation College, Glasthule. Before Barret enteren politics he had a very successful insurance brokerage firm. He first became involved in local politics, serving on Dublin County Council from 1974 until 1982. He failed in his first attempt to get elected to Dáil Éireann in 1977. In 1981 he was returned as Fine Gael TD for Dún Laoighaire. In December 1982 Garret FitzGerald became Taoiseach and Barret was appointed Government Chief Whip and Minister of State at the Departments of An Taoiseach and Defence. Between February 1986 and March 1987 he served as leader of the House with responsibility for Dáil Reform and Minister of State at the Department of Education.

In 1994 John Bruton's Rainbow Coalition came to power and Barret became Government Chief Whip and Minister of State at the Departments of An Taoiseach and Defence. In 1995 Hugh Coveney resigned from the Cabinet in controversial circumstances. Barret was then appointed Minister for Defence & the Marine. During his tenure Barret dealt with the army deafness compensation claims. However, Barret's short term of office was blighted due to critical remarks from Garda and army officers directed towards the Minister. His term as Minister ended in June 1997.
