Seer stone

A seer stone is a magic stone or crystal used for crystallomancy, a form of divination. Some argue that the Hebrew Urim and Thummim were seer stones.

Seer Stone in Mormonism

In historic Mormonism, a seer stone was a stone or crystal said to be used for receiving revelation from God.

In 1827, Joseph Smith, Jr. founder of the Church of Christ/Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints reported that he was shown the location of Golden Plates buried near his home by a resurrected person named Moroni, and he used two seer stones deposited with the gold plates to dictate their translation, which was eventually published as The Book of Mormon. Within the Latter Day Saint movement, he is also believed to have used seer stones to receive revelations which directed him to restore the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, which is understood to have was lost from the earth by a Great Apostasy after the death of the Apostles.

At least one seer stone is also mentioned in the Book of Mormon. Typically a possessor of such a stone is considered a seer.
