Seize the Day

Seize the Day, first published in 1956, is considered one of the greatest literary works by Saul Bellow. It tells the story of Wilhelm Adler (a.k.a. Tommy Wilhelm) who is a man in his mid 40's who is going through a midlife crisis. Bellow begins the book by showing the reader immediately the "courage" that Tommy has. He has never been able to separate himself from being a little child to being a man. He is talked to and treated like a child, and has no courage to stand up to anyone. Tommy doesn't receive from his father what he needs most, which is love and finances to keep him going. Tommy finds this attention with a shady psychologist named Dr. Tamkin. Dr. Tamkin and Tommy have gotten into the commodities market, and often go to watch their stocks. Tamkin has asked Tommy for his money and Tommy has given it to him. He knows that something is wrong with Tamkin, but has no courage to stand up for it and just goes along with the flow. Tamkin gives Tommy advice on his life and dealings with his father and estranged wife. Tamkin tells Tommy to live in the "Here and Now" and to remind himself of that during the day. Tamkin and Tommy meet an old man by the name of Mr. Rappaport at the commodities market. Tamkin talks very highly of Rappaport and when Rappaport asks Tommy to take him, Tamkin encourages him to take him. Tommy takes Rappaport to the cigar store, and when he returns he finds that his stocks have dropped beyond the point of gaining money. He fails to find the most important thing of all, Tamkin. Wilhelm comes to the realization that Tamkin had taken him for a fool and his money. Tommy returns to tell his father what had happened and his father yells at him. He refuses to support his grown child and Tommy returns with telling his father that there are other things that a father can provide a son (love, care, advice etc...) Tommy, wandering the streets of New York City, comes across a huge crowd and thinks that he sees Dr. Tomkin. While searching for Tomkin, Tommy is swept into the crowd and into a big church. In this church he realizes that a funeral is happening. He sees the man in the coffin and is overcome with sadness and grief. He now realizes how sad death is and that he must take advantage of his days.

This novella is considered one of the greatest works by Saul Bellow. He has writen many other works, but Seize the Day is a great insight into the struggle of one man and his attempts to achieve the American Dream.
