Semnan is a city in northern Iran with 80,000 inhabitants (2003 estimate) at an elevation 1,138 metres above sea level at the southern foot of the Elburz Mountains. Semnan is the capital of Semnan Province with 500,000 inhabitants (1996). Semnan is the regional market for local grains, cotton, and tobacco. Of industries in town, the production of textiles and carpets are the most important. Semnan has traditionally been an important stopover on the trade routes between Teheran and Mashhad, and is today linked with the two cities by road and railways. The main landmark of Semnan is the 15th century Friday Mosque. Older, however is the nearby 11th century ornamented Seljuq minaret with an octagonal balcony.
