Sewn boat

The sewn (wooden) boats are a boat or ship model used in Northern Europe, clinker built but held together with tendons or roots.

Although well established, the name is somewhat misleading since it suggests textile boats, and some have proposed to use laced boats (Ge. geschnurte boote) instead. It has earlier been considered to be the poor man's boat, due to the minimal usage of iron nails. However, the nearly abscence of metal makes the boat or ship very light and roboust for shear and strain in streams. Its light weight makes it very mobile when dragging it over land.

Sewn boats are important in the study of Viking Age ship models, which are usually a combination of the basic architecture of sewn boats and cogs.

Longboats or longships, usually nailed with iron, were sometimes repaired by sewing.
