Shanwarwada
(Redirected from Shaniwarwada)
Shanwarwada is a palace fort in the heart of Pune City, India. It was the seat of Peshwe rulers up to 1818 when Peshwe surrendered to British and the palace fort was burnt down. Today only the outer walls remain.
The origin of the name -- Shaniwar means "Saturn's day", or Saturday and wada means palace (or group of houses together in a complex, not necessarily a palace, though this one was). Old Pune city is divided in smaller "secitions" and each section was named by day of week. Today the city has grown far beyond the original 7 sections.
