Shirley Douglas

Shirley Douglas (born 1934 in Weyburn, Saskatchewan) is a Canadian television, film and stage actress.

She is the daughter of former Saskatchewan premier and Canadian statesman Tommy Douglas, and the mother of Kiefer Sutherland and his twin sister Rachel. She was married to their father, actor Donald Sutherland, from 1966 to 1970.

As the daughter of the man who brought medicare to Canada, Douglas has also been one of Canada's most prominent activists in favour of protecting the publicly-funded health care system from privatization.

Douglas was named a member of the Order of Canada in 2003.
