The shot put events at the 2004 Summer Olympics were held on 18 August 2004 at the Ancient Olympia Stadium, this is interestingly, the probable site of the ancient shot put. As such, this is not only the first time the event has been played on site in millennia - but also the first ever female winner of the event at the site (Irina Korzhanenko ). All distances are given in metres.

From the qualifying rounds the top twelve competitors progressed to the final where the previous rounds distances were ignored and they were given a further three throws. After that the top eight went on to have a further three attempts to decide the gold medallist.
