Showcase

For the comic book series published by DC Comics, see Showcase (comic book).

Showcase is a Canadian cable television channel owned by Alliance Atlantis. Its slogan is "Television without borders" and its mandate is to provide edgy, independent content to Canadian viewers.

Its content includes rebroadcasts of popular British television shows such as Prime Suspect or Cracker; repeats of Canadian shows; initial Canadian showings of American series such as Six Feet Under, Queer as Folk and The L Word; and showings of independent and foreign films. At night the channel also shows a number of films and shows that could be considered soft porn, such as Red Shoe Diaries.

Original Programming

  • Trailer Park Boys- mock reality/documentary comedy which has become one of the most popular Canadian series of the last decade.
  • Show Me Yours - A female psychologist and a male biologist who, despite their differences, must co-author a book about erotica.
  • Bliss - Explores the lives, passions and fantasies of women.
  • Kink - This provocative documentary series follows the fetishes of today's sexual explorers.
  • Naked Josh - Meet Josh—a sex prof who has a lot to learn.
  • Paradise Falls - The chronicle of a small town that harbours scandals, deception, passion and revenge.

When the network premiered in the mid-1990s, it garnered some negative publicity due to a disclaimer it would broadcast prior to reruns of older series. The disclaimer, which advised viewers to remember that "attitudes were not always the same as they are now" was applied to relatively recent programs such as Seeing Things. Following media scorn and accusations of political correctness and being condescending to viewers, Showcase abandoned this form of disclaimer.

A showcase is also a performance or exhibit highlighting the work of a performer or group of performers, a particular culture or ethnic group, or of a nationality. Showcases may be presented in theatre, music, art or dance.
