Side lobe

In antenna engineering, the parts of the radiation pattern that are not the main lobe. Side lobes are much smaller than the main lobe and contain less power. It is genereally desirable to minimize the sidelobe level (SLL), which is measured in dB as 20*log10 of the maximum value of the main lobe divided by the maximum value of the largest sidelobe. Typically, this value is around -13dB. More sidelobes are genereated as the length of the antenna is increased. Sidelobes can have the undesirable effect of becoming aliases or grating lobes, which appear identical to main lobes, and can cause disastrous effects in direction finding applications.
