Sinhagad

Sinhagad is a hill fort located near the city of Pune, India. The fort rises about 800 metres above the surrounding countryside. The fort has been a strategically important location since at least the 14th century, and has seen many epic battles. The once extensive fortification is now in ruins, but it shows what the fort must have looked like when it was still in active use as a military outpost.

It was here that Shivaji's general, Tanaji Malusare launched an attack to recapture the fort in March 1670. In the ensuing battle, Tanaji valiantly laid down his life, but the fort was successfully captured by his troops.

Lokmanya Tilak, the freedom fighter had a bungalow atop the fort and Gandhiji is said to have asked for water from there, whenever he was imprisoned at Pune. During World War II, it was used as a camp for German POW's for some time.

Today, the fort is a popular weekend escape for residents of Pune. It houses the memorial to Tanaji, and the tomb of Rajaram -- Shivaji's younger son -- who also died here.
