Smoke (Mortal Kombat character)
Smoke, a ninja warrior of the Lin Kuei clan, is a fictional character in the Mortal Kombat video game franchise.
Smoke first appeared in the second Mortal Kombat game as a hidden character whose abilities were identical to Scorpion, though he is apparently much faster and has a more advanced CPU fighting logic. Smoke would reappear in Mortal Kombat 3, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, and Mortal Kombat Trilogy.
Smoke is a ninja assassin of the Chinese clan known as the Lin Kuei. Smoke was a friend and ally of the younger Sub-Zero. When the Emperor of Outworld, Shao Kahn, challenged Earth's warriors to a special tournament, Smoke and Sub-Zero helped the forces of Earth achieve victory. However, when Sub-Zero and Smoke returned to the Lin Kuei, they discovered that their clan had chosen to transform their best warriors into cyborgs, already performing the procedure on Cyrax and Sektor. Smoke and Sub-Zero turned on their clan and fled. Sub-Zero managed to escape, but Smoke was captured and converted into a cybernetic warrior. Under the programming of the Lin Kuei, Smoke was forced to hunt for his old friend and rogue-- Sub-Zero.
The Outworld forces captured Smoke and imprisoned him. During that time, he shut himself down, but Noob Saibot found and reactivated him, planning on using him as a template for an army of cyborg demons. When Ashrah attacked Saibot, Smoke stood, unmoving, as his soul struggled with his programming for control of his body.
In the movie Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, Smoke appears in his cyborg form to find Liu Kang and Princess Kitana. However, Smoke is stopped by Sub-Zero, who reveals that Smoke was originally after him and states nothing else of their past connections if they existed in the movie storyline.
In the animated telivision series, Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm, Smoke appeared in one episode, serving Shao Kahn and seeking Sub-Zero. In the end, Smoke's human soul was able to over power his programming and he stood to the vow of friendship between him and Sub-Zero.
