Solaris (comics)
Solaris is a DC Comics supervillain, who exists in the distant future of the DC Universe. Solaris was created by Grant Morrison, and first appeared in the DC One Million crossover.
In the 853rd century Solaris is a secondary artificial sun, a sentient machine in the orbit of Uranus that helps to warm the outer parts of the solar system and relay communications and information. His caretaker is the future Starman. In the past Solaris had been a supervillain considered to be the greatest enemy of the Superman dynasty. (Superman is not dead but has left Earth and a chain of Supermen have followed in his footsteps though it is uncertain what their relationship to the original is.) At one point however one of the Supermen died to reprogramme the sun, causing it to recant its villainous ways and work to bettering humanity.
According to DC One Million, Solaris was originally created in the late 20th century, but his first recorded supervillainous activity occurred centuries later, so it is unlikely that he will make any appearances in regular DC Comics. However, Morrison has stated that he will use him in his out-of-continuity All-Star Superman series in 2005.
