According to the schedule, the fifth edition of the South American Championship was to be held in Chile, but Brazil requested to host it because of the independence celebrations. Thus it was held in Rio de Janeiro between September 17 and October 22, 1922.

This tournament is called Copa América since 1975.

All CONMEBOL -as of 1922- members attended: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay.
