Southside (Dublin)
The Southside of Dublin city is the area bounded to the north by the River Liffey, to the east by Dublin Bay and to the south and west by the M50 motorway. It is not an official administrative area but a colloquial term. The Southside is generally seen as more affluent than the Northside, although it includes several working-class areas such as Tallaght, Crumlin and Ringsend. Places in the Southside include Ballsbridge, Ballyfermot, Crumlin, Donnybrook, Inchicore, Kilmainham, Palmerstown.
The stereotypical Southsider has a snobbish image, and is associated with hockey, rugby and University College Dublin. This stereotype is satirized in a Sunday Tribune column written by Paul Howard under the byline Ross O'Carroll-Kelly.
Famous southsiders include former Taoiseach Garret FitzGerald, James Joyce and Oscar Wilde.
