Spice agony

The spice agony is a ritual in the fictional Dune universe created by Frank Herbert. It refers to a trial where the sisterhood of the Bene Gesserit made acolytes (sisters in training) endure the spice trance. Spice being a poison at high dosages, causes the imbiber to fall into a trance that tests the physical and spiritual aspects of that being.

Those who pass the Spice agony arise to a plain that exists beyond the reaches of time, and the spirit exists only between time and heaven, suspended in a motion of pure bliss, all knowledge surrounds them. They must then absorb all that is around them into them, this is the final stage of the spice agony. Many have failed here, absorbing the memories of your ancestors has become a taxing task, and has proven to test the imbibers mental prowess.
