Saint Augustine's College, also known by the local community as "St. Aug," is a four-year historically black college in Raleigh, North Carolina. This liberal arts institution awards bachelors' degrees in a diverse set of fields.

History

Situated in Raleigh's historic Oakwood community, the College began life as Saint Augustine's Normal School and Collegiate Institute. The school was established by the Episcopal Church in order to educate former slaves. Early curricula emphasized Christian-based instruction for both children and adults, while also preparing young men for service in the ministry. As well as basic education and theological training, the school also prepared promising young people for future training at four-year colleges and universities.

Today, St. Aug boasts an official enrollment of about 1,600 students, hailing from thirty-seven states and about thirty other countries around the globe. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in Decatur, Georgia.

The campus' 37 historic and contemporary buildings are just minutes from downtown Raleigh's commercial, educational, governmental, and entertainment centers. Three of its buildings, the Chapel, St. Agnes Hall and Taylor Hall, are registered historic landmarks.

Saint Augustine's College was the nation's first historically black college to have its own on-campus commercial radio and television stations: WAUG-AM750 and WAUG-TV68, Cable Channel 20, and is the only school in the Raleigh/Durham area to offer a degree in film production. Over the years, it has become one of the country's most highly respected private, accredited, historically black, coeducational institutions of higher learning.

Campus Life

Located just three hours from the mountains and two hours from the coast, Raleigh has something for everyone. Its rich history and cultural sophistication are evident through an array of museums, art galleries, professional sports and entertainment facilities. A comfortable climate, a great location and a variety of resources, Raleigh is often rated among the best places to live in the nation.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Student Union serves as the hub of campus life, housing student activities, campus dining, and the campus bookstore. Students also have access to the campus track and field facilities, and a state-of-the-art Wellness Center. Equipped with an exercise and training room for its student athletes, the newly renovated Emery Gymnasium is the site of friendly athletic competition and non-competitive leisure sporting activities.

An Army ROTC program is housed in the Tuttle Building on campus. Housed within the Prezell R. Robinson Library are African American Historical Collections, as well as the Delany Sisters ("Having Our Say") papers and artifacts. The Seby B. Jones Fine Arts Center is home to art works produced by student art majors. The campus radio and TV station offers internship opportunities to communication majors, and a Community Development Facility, is a small business incubator sponsor. The Division of Education oversees the National Youth Sports Program.

Today Saint Augustine's College is a private, urban, coeducational, undergraduate liberal arts institution with a core curriculum that includes rigorous, in-depth programs in business; computer science; teacher education; the natural sciences; mathematics; interdisciplinary studies; social and behavioral sciences; theater and film; adult education; community development; communications; and military science. Accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the college awards the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Science.

With a student/faculty ratio of 13:1, Saint Augustine's provides an intimate educational setting where faculty members know students by name. The college enrolls just over 1300 students. Nearly half come from North Carolina and the remainder from 37 states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Jamaica and 30 foreign countries. Its faculty consists of more than 100 dedicated men and women, all skilled teachers and scholars. The mission of Academic Affairs at the college is to promote an educational environment that is conducive to life-long learning across the broad spectrum of liberal arts. Saint Augustine's offers the Bachelor of Arts degree in communication, elementary education, English, English education, exceptional children's education, history, music education, political science, psychology, social studies education, sociology, theatre/film production, and the visual arts. The Bachelor of Science degree is offered in accounting, African-American Studies, art, biology, biology education, business administration, business education, chemistry, community economic development, computer information systems, computer science, criminal justice, human performance and wellness, industrial hygiene and safety, Industrial mathematics, mathematics, mathematics education, physical education (teaching), and pre-medical sciences.
