Stoughton is home to Stoughton Trailers, LLC, manufacturers of semi-truck trailers and intermodal containers.
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 12,354 people, 4,734 households, and 3,185 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,204.5/km² (3,116.6/mi²). There are 4,890 housing units at an average density of 476.8/km² (1,233.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.66% White, 0.92% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.70% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.36% from other races, and 1.05% from two or more races. 1.24% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 4,734 households out of which 37.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.6% are married couples living together, 10.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% are non-families. 26.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.06.
In the city the population is spread out with 28.3% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 32.6% from 25 to 44, 18.4% from 45 to 64, and 14.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 89.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $47,633, and the median income for a family is $58,543. Males have a median income of $37,956 versus $26,187 for females. The per capita income for the city is $21,037. 5.0% of the population and 3.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.9% of those under the age of 18 and 7.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
The current mayor of Stoughton Wisconsin is Helen Johnson. The city council has 12 members each serving a 3-year term.
