Sudak
Sudak is city in the Crimea. It was founded in the 3rd century. In the Middle Ages it was known as "Sugdak", or "Soldeya" (meaning "Sogdian"). The Khazars ruled Sudak from the early 700's until 1016. In 1016 it was seized by the Byzantines during their campaign against the Khazar warlord Georgius Tzul, though it seems to have been relatively autonomous within the Byzantine sphere. The Cumans took possession at the end of the 11th century. The city came into Genoese control in 1365. In 1475 it was taken by the Ottoman Empire and given to Crimean Khanate. In 1783 it came under Russian rule, when the Crimean Khanate was annexed by the Russian Empire.
The old name of the city as an episcopal see in the Russian Orthodox Church, Sourozh, is now transferred to the Diocese of Sourozh, in Great Britain (see Anthony Bloom).
