Super Bowl XXIV

Super Bowl XXIV was played on January 28, 1990 in New Orleans, Louisiana. The San Francisco 49ers beat the Denver Broncos 55 to 10. It remains the most lopsided game in Super Bowl history to date.

Joe Montana was named the Super Bowl MVP, his third award in his fourth Super Bowl victory. He completed 22 of 29 passes for a total of 297 yards and 5 touchdowns. Jerry Rice caught 3 of those touchdown passes. Head coach George Seifert was the second rookie head coach to win a Super Bowl.

The game was telecast in the United States by CBS. Pat Summerall and John Madden called the game.

The Game

The San Francisco 49ers blew out the Denver Broncos by scoring on six of their first eight drives.

The 49ers scored first on a 20 yard pass from Joe Montana to Jerry Rice. The Broncos then responded by kicking a field goal to make the score 7-3.

On San Francisco's next drive, Denver's defense forced them to punt. But then Broncos running back Bobby Humphrey lost a fumble to the 49ers at midfield.

From then on, the 49ers scored 34 unanswered points:

  • A 7-yard pass from Montana to tight end Brent Jones (extra point was missed).
  • A 1-yard run by running back Tom Rathman.
  • Rice's 38-yard pass from Montana.
  • Rice's 28-yard pass from Montana.
  • A 35-yard pass from Montana to wide receiver John Taylor.

Denver's only touchdown, a 3-yard run by quarterback John Elway, came midway through the third quarter. But by then, the 49ers still had the lead 41-10.
