Super Street Fighter II
Super Street Fighter II was originally released in 1993 in arcades around the world, and was later released on home consoles. It was originally planned to be a true sequel to Street Fighter II, but this was abandoned due to time constraints.
Super Street Fighter II introduced four new playable characters: Cammy, a British MI6 agent; Fei Long, modeled after actor Bruce Lee; T. Hawk (short for Thunder Hawk), the first native American fighting game character; and Dee Jay, a fighter from Jamaica.
Super Street Fighter II also established many new conventions for the Street Fighter series, including a combo point system, faster rendering, improved animations, bonus points awarded for "first attacks" and "dizzy recoveries", and each character had eight different costume colors. In the arcades, Super Street Fighter II updated the soundtrack with the use of Capcom QSound, sporting applied acoustics, making it sound like as if it were played on the SNES.
Ken and Ryu, whose play styles were virtually identical in previous games, had added emphasis to more clearly distinguish between the characters. Ryu's fireball, the Hadoken, was redrawn, while Ken's Hadoken used the same sprites from the previous games; however Ken's Shoryuken maneuver was redrawn to leave a fire trail, whereas Ryu's remained the same.
Other subtle changes took place with most of the characters: new moves were added and parameters of the moves were altered, generally making the game more balanced than its previous iterations.
An update of the game, Super Street Fighter II Turbo (known as Super Street Fighter II X - Grand Master Challenge in Japan), was released in 1994 which featured enhanced speed and difficult, as well as the first appearance of the then secret fighter Akuma. It also was the first game in the series to have super combos.
Super Street Fighter II Turbo has been considered the canonical version of Street Fighter II.
