Syama sastri, who is said to be one of the trimurthis in music, was born at Tiruvarur on Apr 26, 1762. He was named Venkatakrishna by his parents. Though he doesn't come from a family with musical background, he was initiated by Sangeetha Swami.

His family was totally devoted to Goddess Kamatchi of Kanchipuram and hence most of his compositions werein praise of Her. He composed over 300 songs, out of which only 60-70 are available today. His compositions were predominantly in Telugu and some in Tamil and Sanskrit. He has composed the Navaratnamalika in praise of Goddess Meenakshi, Madurai.
