TCS Concordia

TCS Concordia is the name of at least three ships in the fictional Wing Commander universe.

The first was the lead ship of the Concordia class fleet carriers in 2634 1. This Concordia led the desperate defense of planet McAuliffe during the Kilrathi's opening thrust into the Terran Confederation; she was lost following the battle due to sustained damage.

The second was the lead ship of the Concordia class supercruisers during the first two decades of the Kilrathi War 2. She was Commodore Geoffrey Tolwyn's flagship from 2645 through the early 2650s until her loss or replacement sometime before 2660.

The third was a dreadnought of the Confederation class, 983.7 meters long3. She served as Admiral Tolwyn's flagship from her commissioning in 26614 to the Battle of Earth in 26685. In the seven years of her service she destroyed eight carriers, twenty other capital ships, and fought in nine major fleet actions5. This third Concordia was destroyed in early 2669 over Vespus6; her remains crashed mostly intact to the planet and came to rest off the Mistral Coast, a total operational loss.

Namesake

The Concordias were named after Concordia University in Austin, Texas, where Wing Commander developer Origin Systems Inc. was based until 2004. The word Concordia is from Latin; it means accord or harmony, and as such is a popular name for religious colleges in the United States.
