TVE 2, commonly known as "La 2" ("La dos"), is Spain's second state-owned television channel for the public broadcasting service. Its first broadcast was on November 15th, 1966. Unlike sister channel TVE 1 ("La primera"), it is not an overtly populist channel, and rather like BBC 2 in the UK is famous for a more "intellectual" style of programming (often popular with university students) featuring wildlife documentaries, classic films from home and abroad, more "alternative" American TV series - "Will and Grace", "Six Feet Under" etc. - and investigative reporting.
Unlike the BBC, both TVE channels show commercials during and between progammes, although recent developments of the Government's TV policy has hinted at the possible removal of all kind of advertising from the channel.
During the Aznar years the TVE 2 evening news bulletins presented by Lorenzo Milá ( and subsequently by Fran Llorente) were seen as a refreshing alternative to what many considered to be government propaganda on TVE 1, despite both channels being state-controlled.
