Talk:Devlet Haci Giray

This article needs to be merged into Haci Giray for consistency, to avoid any confusion with the first Devlet Giray. See List of Crimean khans for details.

The "List of ..." is no authority. Haci Giray is not descriptive enough. If the article should be moved, it should be moved to "Devlet Haci Giray", because "Haci Giray" is "Giray who made Hajj". Nearly all of them made Hajj. --195.2.78.136 05:16, 27 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Please provide evidence that he was known as 'Devlet Haci Giray'. Running a few Google searches for "Haji Giray", "Hajji Giray" or "Haci Giray" will provide enough counter-evidence to your claims. The fact that he made Hajj is highly irrelevant here. We are concerned by what name he was known in history.
The authority on Crimean Khans should be The web site of the Khan Palace Bakhchisaray. Please pay attention to its contents.

Haci Giray is the only variant

Any known coins and monumental inscriptions from Crimea mentioning this khan reffer him exclusively as Haci Giray (nothing like Devlet of Haci Devlet). "Devlet" is taken from European chronicles (Chronika Dlugosza, f.ex), which apparently mentions two persons under the single name "Haci Devlet Giray": Devlet Berdi and his nephew Haci Giray.

"Haci" does not inavoidably mean "a person who had been in hajj". Along with "Giray", "Haci" was one of common Crimean Tatar names. Many persons in Crimea were named Haci having never been in Mecca.
