Taltos
Taltos is the title of the third novel in the trilogy Lives of the Mayfair Witches .
The Taltos are a fictional primate species present in Anne Rice's Trilogy Lives of the Mayfair Witches and the semi-stand alone novel Blood Canticle.
The Taltos possess 92 chromosomes a piece. They are born nearly full height, and in their first few hours of life experience great growth. They are reliant on intake of great quantities of their mother's breastmilk at this time. This strange phenomenon earned them the title 'Walking Babies' in folklore. A full grown Taltos is easily seven feet tall, and very slender; their heads are very large and their skulls rather soft. Taltos are very commonly childlike and näive. Music and rhymes will hypnotize them. Their lifespans can be centuries long.
The Taltos lived peacefully on an island, until this island was destroyed by the volcano that created it. The species all but died out, and very few remain.
