Taylor is a city located in Williamson County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 13,575.

Geography

Taylor is located at 30°34'21" North, 97°24'60" West (30.572371, -97.416546).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 35.1 km² (13.6 mi²). 35.0 km² (13.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.22% water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 13,575 people, 4,730 households, and 3,429 families residing in the city. The population density is 387.4/km² (1,003.2/mi²). There are 5,079 housing units at an average density of 144.9/km² (375.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 67.86% White, 14.21% African American, 0.52% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 14.97% from other races, and 2.06% from two or more races. 34.08% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,730 households out of which 36.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.6% are married couples living together, 14.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.5% are non-families. 23.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.74 and the average family size is 3.24.

In the city the population is spread out with 28.7% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 19.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $38,549, and the median income for a family is $46,604. Males have a median income of $31,124 versus $25,042 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,683. 14.2% of the population and 10.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.1% of those under the age of 18 and 11.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

About Taylor, Texas

The community of Taylor recently put together an innovative concept. TaylorCNET is a collaborative partnership between the City of Taylor, Taylor ISD, Taylor Economic Development, Williamson County, the Taylor Housing Authority, Johns Community Hospital, Taylor Chamber of Commerce and Temple College at Taylor. This partnership is dedicated to the quality of life in Taylor and recognizes the important role technology plays in that objective. The generous $500,000 in state funding provided by Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund went a long way in helping TaylorCNET realize its goal. A five-member Board of Directors continues to provide leadership and guidance to a project that can only be viewed as a great success. TaylorCNET boasts 14 public access points throughout the city along with a state-of-the-art distance access facility.

TaylorCNET is instrumental in keeping Taylor on the leading edge of technology in Central Texas. The Old Taylor Middle School building is abuzz with activity and technology is the theme. The Taylor Public Library has housed their public access computers at this location for two years. TaylorCNET also has its base of operation from this facility with a state-of-the-art computer lab with Smart Board Technology, an impressive videoconferencing center and "office for a day" capabilities. Moneyvue Financial has recently moved into the facility which has virtually filled the first floor of this great old building. Moneyvue employs programmers and performs Research and Development from this location. It is a great testament to the innovative way Taylor celebrates its heritage by using and not eliminating historic structures.
