Redding Township is a township located in Clare County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 526.

Communities

• Temple is an unincorporated community just off Michigan State Highway 61 approximately 12 miles west of Harrison. Located along the Muskegon River, it was a bustling area when Michigan's logging industry was in its prime; however, it is now regarded as a ghost town, like many of lower Michigan's former logging centers.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 91.5 km² (35.3 mi²). 91.4 km² (35.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.11% water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 526 people, 219 households, and 153 families residing in the township. The population density is 5.8/km² (14.9/mi²). There are 497 housing units at an average density of 5.4/km² (14.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 97.15% White, 0.57% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.38% from other races, and 1.52% from two or more races. 0.57% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 219 households out of which 26.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.4% are married couples living together, 6.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.1% are non-families. 24.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 2.79.

In the township the population is spread out with 24.1% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 25.9% from 25 to 44, 27.8% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 104.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 108.9 males.

The median income for a household in the township is $24,438, and the median income for a family is $28,864. Males have a median income of $25,469 versus $26,000 for females. The per capita income for the township is $14,687. 19.4% of the population and 16.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 20.2% of those under the age of 18 and 11.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
