Temporal Investigations

In the fictional universe of Star Trek, the Department of Temporal Investigations is a section of Starfleet Intelligence that deals with both preserving and maintaining the timeline.

It is unclear whether or not operatives can actually travel in time; the only time they have been seen is in an episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine in which two TI agents interview the DS9 crew about their travel back in time to the days of Captain Kirk's time. The fact that Temporal Investigations knew about the trip at all does suggest they have a means to detect time travel, perhaps involving the Guardian of Forever.

By the 29th century, the entire Starfleet has taken over the function of Temporal Investigations, and operates entire fleets of ships which can travel in time and protect the timeline from any changes. (Star Trek: Voyager episode "Relativity")
