The Cheeky Girls

The Cheeky Girls are Monica and Gabriela Irimia, twin sisters from Transylvania, Romania. The sisters were born on October 31, 1982 to Doru and Margit Irimia.

Their early life in Romania consisted of studying gymnastics and ballet where they toured with the Hungarian National Opera. Moving to the United Kingdom with their mother in 2002, the girls shot to fame as the Cheeky Girls after auditions on the British TV shows, Popstars: The Rivals and Channel Four's Model Behaviour.

Although they failed to pass the auditions for either shows, they received enough publicity to launch pop careers, releasing four singles and a debut album in the UK, and also touring Europe and Asia.

Their music is primarily disco-pop, and is generally thought to be aimed at young children. All their songs are written by their mother, who acts as their manager. The lyrics are simplistic and usually contain the phrase, Cheeky Cheeky.

In January 2004, their first single, The Cheeky Song (Touch my Bum) was voted the worst pop record of all time in a Channel Four poll.

Despite their apparent lack of talent (they have never performed singing live), they have had continued success in the UK, hitting the headlines on various occasions such as when they entered the cockpit of a KLM flight from Amsterdam to Heathrow sparking complaints from passengers that the plane could have crashed; and also when they were mugged in London's Oxford Street.

In November 2004, they appeared on a celebrity duo version of the Weakest Link, in which they performed extremely well, given their limited English skill, even holding the place of Strongest Link in a number of rounds.
