The Machinist

The Machinist is a 2004 drama/thriller film, directed by Brad Anderson.

Christian Bale, who plays the protagonist, Trevor Reznik, starved himself three weeks prior to filming, as his character needed to look drastically thin. He apparently lost over 60 pounds, around a 1/3 of his body weight.

Plot

Trevor Reznik (Bale) is suffering from insomnia, hasn't slept for over a year, and has become emaciated with a skeleton-like appearance. He doesn't know what is wrong, and carries on working as a machinist. His colleagues, noticing his unusual appearance and behaviour, begin to shy away from him, eventually turning on him after he's involved in an accident where a co-worker loses an arm. Trevor is plagued with guilt and eventually becomes paranoid, believing the other workers are conspiring to get rid of him.

He begins to find cryptic messages in his apartment, then learns that one of the people involved in the accident apparently does not exist. Not knowing whether these incidents are a result of his fatigue or an attempt by someone to drive him mad he tries to investigate.

Tagline: A little guilt goes a long way...
