The Rifle Brigade (Prince Consort's Own)
The 8th Battalion of the Rifle Brigade was part of the 41st Brigade of the 14th (Light) Division of XV Corps. They were mainly made up of volunteers from the outbreak of WW1.
They saw action including Ypres sailent and the Somme.
Noteably the action they were in at Hooge, Belgium (30/31st July 1915) saw the first use of flamethrowers by the Germans, Sydney Clayton Woodroffe was awarded the VC for his actions in this battle.
Also the action they were in at the battle of Flers - Courclette (15th September 1916) saw the first ever use of tanks by the British.
The Rifle Brigade was eventually incorparated into the Royal Green Jackets, who have all the brigades historical information and artifacts.
