Theophilus
Various people have been known by the name Theophilus. These include:
- Theophilus of Antioch — c 163, an early Christian patriarch.
- Theophilus of Alexandria — (? – 412) patriarch of Alexandria.
- Theophilus of Adana (died c. 538) bishop who made a pact with the devil.
- Emperor Theophilus — (829 – 842) a Byzantine emperor of the second of the Phrygian dynasty.
- Theophilus Presbyter — (1070 – 1125) a Benedictine monk, metallurgist, and armourer. Thought to be a pseudonym of Roger of Helmarshausen
- The Theophilus to whom the Gospel of Luke is addressed; Coptic tradition asserts he was a Jew of Alexandria. (Dissenting traditions within Christianity believe the Gospel is not addressing a particular person, but any theophilus = lover of God.)
There is also a Theophilus crater on the Moon.
