Thomas Steers
Thomas Steers born 1672 died 1750. Britain's first major civil engineer. Built many canals, the world first wet dock, the Old Dock and a Theatre.
He learnt about hydraulics as a soldier for William of Orange in the Netherlands. In 1717 he built several docks at Liverpool, as well as St George's Church , the Old Ropery Theatre , a dry dock, pier and others.
He was Mayor of Liverpool from 1739-1740. In 1745, during the Jacobite rebellion he was responsible for the fortification of Liverpool
