Thorgils Skarthi

Thorgils Skarthi (the hare-lipped) (correctly Žorgils Skarši) is described in the Kormįks saga. He was a Viking raider and poet who founded Scarborough, England about 966. He had a brother Kormįkr. Robert Mannyng of Brunne in his book Story of Inglande (finished in 1338) quoted from two lost romances about Skarši, including that he had a brother called Fleyn. If so, this Kormįkr may have had the nickname Fleinn, and if so may have founded Flamborough (from Old Norse *Fleinaborg). Žorgils Skarši and Kormįkr came to England not long after Harald Greytooth 's expedition to Bjarmaland (near the White Sea, a part of what is now Russia, compare the placename Perm).

Scarborough was soon destroyed by a rival Viking group, and was later rebuilt.
