Thousand-yard stare
The phrase thousand-yard stare refers to two phenomena:
1) an unfocused gaze of the eyes, typically by soldiers, typical of acute battle shock and/or post-traumatic stress disorder; also seen in reactions to traumatic events; coined during the Vietnam War
2) a slang term for a sniper's observation using a sniper scope, implying that the sniper could engage the target thus acquired from a considerable distance away
The phrase was coined during the Vietnam War.
