Time Inc.

Time Inc. is the publishing arm of media conglomerate Time Warner. Its roots trace back to 1923 through the founding of Time magazine, a newsmagazine that melded together critiques on popular culture and current events, as well as commentaries.

Contents

History

Time Inc.'s properties are primarily in book publishing and magazine publishing, although in the 1970's, they were the founding force behind the Home Box Office (HBO) network. A major figurehead in the process was Gerald Levin (who would later go on to helm the then newly formed Time Warner), who headed the HBO division and then later ran Time Inc.

Time Inc.'s biggest competitors are the Hearst Corporation, Conde Nast, and Gruener + Jahr (a division of Bertelsmann, although they do collaborate on a few joint ventures, notably Bookspan ).

Aside from magazines, Time Inc. also helms the Warner Books division, Little Brown & Company (a book publishing company), and Time Warner Bookmark.

Mergers

Time Inc. merged with Warner Communications in 1990 to create Time Warner, a diversified media company which at the time included recorded music, motion picture production and distribution, television production and distribution, studio facilities, film libraries, cable television networks, book publishing houses, and magazine publishing. The merger was billed as a merger between "old media" (publishing) and "new media" (television, movies, and music). While this held true for the original merger of Time Inc. and Warner Communications, it did not hold true for a disastrous future merger a decade later (the merger of AOL and Time Warner, which was an attempt to unify "old media" [movies, publishing, music] and "new media" [the internet]).
