- February 15 1971 Britain's old currency system abandoned as decimalisation is introduced.
1973
- December 9 1973 Sunningdale Agreement signed, which concluded talks aimed to set up a Council of Ireland.
1984
- October 11 1984 Bomb blast carried out by the IRA at the Grand Hotel, Brighton, kills a number of prominent Conservatives, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was the primary target although she escaped uninjured.
1989
- April 15 1989 The Hillsborough disaster occurs at an FA Cup football match in which 96 people die.
