Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield is a computer game developed and published by Ubisoft and released on March 16, 2003. The Rainbow Six video game series is based on Tom Clancy's best-selling book of the same name.

Based on the Unreal engine, Raven Shield is probably the most popular tactical shooter game, at least on the computer. Although SWAT 3 , for example, was more realistic, it was not action-oriented enough for the average gamer; it was, perhaps, too realistic. Raven Shield moved toward mainstream first-person shooters like Counter-Strike, adapting various features absent in previous versions. These included: the ability to see one's weapon while in first-person view (the game also included a third-person view), many new additions (including larger magazines and scopes), and a redesigned multiplayer. It had one of the best graphical options of any first-person shooter of its time, even surpassing various console shooters, namely its main counterpart on the PlayStation 2, SOCOM II: U.S. Navy SEALs.

The popularity of Raven Shield was shown when it was nominated for many game reviewers' awards, including Best Sound Effects, Best Action Game, and Best PC Game (on GameSpy and GameSpot, among others). However, most people agreed that Call of Duty the better FPS overall for 2003, as it garnered Best PC Game on GameSpy and Best Sound Effects on GameSpot.

PC expansions

Athena Sword

Athena Sword is the first expansion for the PC version of Raven Shield. Athena Sword expands on the original by adding eight new missions, five new multiplayer missions, three new multiplayer gamemodes, and seven new weapons. Athena Sword was developed by Ubisoft-Milan and released on March 9, 2004.

Iron Wrath

Iron Wrath is the second expansion for the PC version of Raven Shield. It is expected sometime in the Spring of 2005. The expansion was announced in a recent patch for Raven Shield. Since the patch's release, however, Ubisoft have announced plans for a Rainbow Six 4 (working title), starting rumors that Iron Wrath may never be completed.

Rainbow Six 3 console versions

Rainbow Six 3 was initially ported to Microsoft's Xbox console to take advantage of the Xbox Live online functionality. The XBox version was developed by Ubisoft-Montreal. The game would later be ported to PlayStation 2 and GameCube in early 2004 by developer Ubisoft-Shanghai. Since the Nintendo GameCube is inable of playing games online, it lacks perhaps the most vital part of the game that made the Xbox version such a success and is therefore limited to a mere 2 players for multiplayer. Although both games are titled Rainbow Six 3, this version is not subtitled Raven Shield.

Rainbow Six 3: Black Arrow

Black Arrow is a semi-sequel to the console version of Rainbow Six 3. Still titled Rainbow Six: 3, Black Arrow was developed and published by Ubisoft and released for the XBox on August 5, 2004. Like Rainbow Six 3, Black Arrow was created to take advantage of Microsoft's popular Xbox Live online service.

Black Arrow addes two new gameplay modes for multiplayer, "conquest" and "capture the flag". Since the release of Black Arrow, new content has been released and is available to download via Xbox Live.
