Tony Barton
Tony Barton (1936-1993) was an English football manager.
Tony Barton was assistant manager to Ron Saunders when Aston Villa won the Football League Championship in 1981 (their first title in 71 years) and was promoted to the manager's seat the following January when Saunders resigned.
Barton guided Villa to victory over Bayern Munich in the 1982 European Cup final and followed this up with the European Super Cup in 1983, but their league form did not match their success in Europe and he resigned two years later.
Barton was later manager of Northampton Town but failed to succeed in this role and quit in 1986, although he was assistant manager of Southampton from 1987 to 1991 under Chris Nicholl .
On August 20 1993, Tony Barton died of a heart attack at the age of 56.
