Tony Mowbray

Tony Mowbray is a former professional football player who is now a football manager.

He played for Middlesbrough and Celtic and is now manager of Scottish Premier League team Hibernian. He is nicknamed 'Mogga'.

Managerial Career: Hibs (06/04 - present)

Hibs' board outwitted the Scottish media and stunned the public with the arrival of Tony Mowbray as manager in June 2004 - literally minutes earlier a news programme stated categorically that different candidate had been named as the new gaffer, Mowbray not having been mentioned in the preceding months of speculation.

Considering Mowbray had no managerial experience (he had been a coach at Ipswich for the previous 5 years), his appointment was something of a gamble. However, after a few months it became apparent that the directors had been just as skilful in their choice as they had been in hoodwinking the media, as the young Hibs side received plaudits from all corners.

An instant hit with the fans, Mowbray instilled his philosophy of playing a passing, entertaining game in his players, who responded immediately as the team rose to 3rd in the SPL (i.e. behind Celtic and Rangers).

It remains to be seen if Mogga can make it stick - if he proves capable of cementing Hibs as the 3rd force in Scotland or winning a trophy (especially the Scottish Cup), his status would become that of 'legend', alongside Eddie Turnbull himself.
