In-game details
Picking this Pokémon as a starter is categorized as choosing a "Medium-Hard" difficulty level because the first gym leader uses pokémon whose type is very resistant to Torchic's firey moves. However, Torchic is the only Fire-type Pokémon available between Littleroot Town (where trainers receive it) and Firey Path. Plus, the third gym leader (which is before Firey Path) uses some steel-type Pokémon which are easily beaten by fire-type attacks.
This Pokémon can learn some moves bird pokémon learn, like peck. However, as it evolves into a Fighting-type Pokémon it doesn't learn any more similar attacks.
In the anime
In the Pokémon anime, May chose Torchic as her starter because she considered it to be cute. Her young Torchic is very playful and fun, even though it's not her strongest battle Pokémon.
