Toronto Zoo Domain Ride
In 1976, the Metro Toronto Zoo began operating an automated guideway transit (AGT) system, a monorail type vehicle to carry visitors from one domain to another.
The Domain Ride or the Canadian Domain Ride operator in a ring route with 4 stations and 1 stopover:
- American - North near Finch Avenue
- Entrance Facilities - East at Main Entance
- Indomalaya - Southeast
- Viewing Stopover - Southwest
- Madagascar - Northwest
The vehicle was a rubber wheel AGT prototype developed by American firm Bendix-Dashaveyor. A single AGT carried 40 passengers.
The ride was popular, but an accident in 1994 injured 20 passengers and led the zoo to halt operations. Plans to scrapped the vehicle and tracks dragged well past 1999 and was replaced with the tractor-trailer Zoomobile.
AGT was sold as the new means of personal transport in 1970s, but the monorail systems were only popular in use at airports and amusement parks in the United States.
