Townhead

Townhead is an area of the city of Glasgow, Scotland.

Located virtually in the city centre, it is bordered to the west by the area of Cowcaddens. The housing is primarily ex-council stock (Glasgow has no council houses since their transfer to the Glasgow Housing Association ), although there are a number of student residences for both Glasgow Caledonian University and Strathclyde University which are both nearby.

Glasgow Queen Street Station is also nearby, as is the Glasgow Buchanan Bus Station .

The original and oldest part of Glasgow, this is where St Mungo (Kentigern) had his encampment. Amongst the most famous, and oldest, of streets is Rottenrow. It was from this high vantage point, Mungo could see down the Clyde and be forewarned of the approach of any hostile people (Edinburgh folks not included, they came from the East.)

Rottenrow is also home to the "The Maternity," it's likely a disproportionate number of keelies saw the first light of day at this famous institution. Many famous people were born on the street, including Bobby Robertson's clan: Auld Annie, George, Andy, Nan, and Betty

Mungo's camp was by the banks of the Molendinar Burn. In the 30's, and until it was covered over, it was a cesspool of human waste and chemicals from the "sheep dip" just behind John Knox Street.

The Great Eastern Hotel is/was on Duke Street at the foot of John Knox Street. In the "good old" days it was a model lodging house. A very large modern day hotel equal to the squalor that Charles Dickens described in his Victorian London. "Models" (pronounced Moadles) were for the poorest and most unfortunate of the citizenry.

A great place to grow up in.
