History

It was officially founded in September 21, 1608 as was disposed in D. Fernando Valdés Salas' will. In the beginnings the University has four Schools: Arts, previous studies for the others Schools, Law, Cánones and Theology.
The Schools’ operation rules were given in this will, in the Old Statutes (Estatutos Viejos) and the rules of Salamanca University in no-contemplated cases. This fact implicate that Oviedo University has the same auto-government capacity that other Universities in Spain. Auto-government become apparent in the Academic Privilege (Fuero Académico), the Rector is a supreme judge with civil, penal and even religious competences.
In this moment the University has five campuses: El Milán, Llamaquique, El Cristo, Viesques (Gijón) and campus of Mieres where the follow schoolings are imparted:
